Emergency Medicine Volunteer Programs
Project Healthcare
Dr. Goldfrank, one of the fathers of Emergency Medicine, founded Project Healthcare in 1981 to give collegiate students an authentic experience as healthcare providers. Project Healthcare has trained and mentored nearly one thousand volunteers, students, and soon-to-be healthcare providers at Bellevue Hospital and most recently NYU Langone Health–Brooklyn.
Since its inception, Project Healthcare has been an immersive 10-week summer volunteer program for a national and international collegiate population interested in medicine to aid them in making educated medical-related career choices through clinical experience, education, and community outreach. Participants learn to function as patient advocates while rotating in over 10 clinical rotations (primarily in Emergency Medicine), are educated through weekly meetings, lectures, special projects and presentations, and act as community members through community events, collaboration and service. Many patients cite their interactions with our volunteers as the best moment of their hospital visit.
HCOP
Apart from our Project Healthcare program, we host several students every summer in our Health Career Opportunity Program (HCOP). Founded by Howard A. Rusk, MD, and sponsored by the Wallace Foundation, the Health Career Opportunity Program has graduated approximately 5,700 students throughout its 50-year history. Offered in partnership with Rusk Rehabilitation, our Department hosts the students for 8-weeks in over 20 clinical rotations.
PAVERS
Additionally, throughout the academic-year our Emergency Department hosts Patient Advocacy Volunteers in Emergency Room Services (PAVERS) at both Bellevue Hospital and NYU Langone Health–Brooklyn. These volunteers dedicate 30-weeks volunteering with our Department in 3 clinical locations.
All our Volunteer Programs are 100% free to participants. It is our aim to bridge the opportunity gap for students that aspire a career in medicine by making our programs as accessible as possible. Your donations will go directly back to Emergency Medicine volunteer programming this includes: volunteer uniforms, program supplies, participant scholarships, housing costs, and staffing.
We thank you for your donation!
