Ari's Fight Against Epilepsy
In May 2023, our lives changed forever. Ari, our joyful, healthy, energetic, beautiful little boy was about to turn three. He was adjusting to life as big brother to 4 month old Liam. Then, he had his first ever seizure.
What followed was a series of testing, hospitalizations, and diagnoses. Throughout the next few months, Ari proceeded to have hundreds of seizures and was put on varying medications, serving as both miracles and poisons as his little body struggled to strike a balance between seizure control and quality of life from side effects. Ultimately, Ari was diagnosed with a rare form of drug resistant childhood epilepsy.
Each day, we hold our breath and pray for Ari's continued progress. Thanks to a team of incredible doctors, he is now in a much better place, and we continue to hold on to our hope that we may have found a path that can work for Ari. It is not an easy path - filled with multiple medications and an extremely restrictive ketogenic diet.
Many people, particularly children, live with epilepsy. While we have accepted Ari's diagnosis and adjusted our way of life to best support him, we refuse to accept that we are powerless in impacting his outcome. Ari fights every day - every time he takes his medication, turns down any food offered to him outside the home, calmly shows up to blood tests or EEGs like an old pro. And we will fight with him - for better treatments, for a cure, for a chance that his life and those like him can be easier.
