I’d like to invite you to contribute to my mitzvah project for NYU Langone Medical Center and FACES. There are so many reasons to get involved with this community that’s working together to enable the best medical care, research, and education. But this cause in particular is special to me.
Recovery is a difficult but rewarding experience, and I can speak to this as I have first hand knowledge. At the start of my first grade year, I was diagnosed with a extremely large brain tumor which required immediate surgery. My recovery period was long and difficult but with the help of family, friends, doctors, and many of you I was able to overcome this incredible challenge in life. For the next couple of years, my life was back to normal except for checking in with doctors now and then.
In February 2013, I went into NYU Langone for my yearly MRI check-up. I didn’t think much of it, but the news I received in the following weeks really shook up my life up once again. My neurologist spotted a micro-tumor on the right side of my brain and I was recommended to have immediate surgery so the tumor did not grow any bigger. Just when I thought I had moved beyond this, I was facing another major surgery and did not know what was going to be next for me. Thanks to my team of doctors and professionals, my wonderful family, my friends, and everyone else who supported me, my recovery was quick and I soon reentered my normal life. These two experiences helped me understand the power of recovery and the impact it can have on a person’s life.
As part of my recovery process after the second surgery, my brother and I would run before school. Over time, I was able to run longer distances in shorter times. Only three months after my second surgery, my brother and I ran the Israeli Day 5K race in Central Park. This race meant a lot to my entire family, friends, and all those who supported me.
After my first brain tumor, my parents created a fund to raise money for brain tumor research. Throughout my recovery process for both surgeries, friends and family generously donated money to the fund, and this has helped sponsor many research projects at NYU Langone. As my Bar Mitzvah approaches, I’ve been thinking a lot about what I can do to help others out that may face similar challenges. I’ve decided to run, with my brother Samson, the Retro 4-Miler Race in Central Park to continue my family’s commitment to raising money for brain tumor research. The race will take place on the morning of June 5th and I hope to be supported by all of you who have always supported me in the past. This will mean a lot to me and will continue to support my family’s mission to allow other children to have the same opportunity for recovery as I did.
