ParentCorps - What We Do
Research shows that early childhood education - when grounded in close partnership with families and children’s social-emotional learning - can have a profound positive impact on children’s life trajectories, helping to reduce inequities rooted in poverty and structural racism. However, those on the ground in schools often report a lack of support to provide this kind of high-quality pre-K experience to children and families.
In partnership with pre-K programs, ParentCorps works to build a different early education experience - one that centers race and culture, engages parents as partners, and supports children’s social-emotional well-being - to build a future where all children thrive. Two randomized controlled trials show that our model (which includes training for pre-K educators, social-emotional learning for pre-K children, and programming for pre-K families) has meaningful, sustained impacts on children’s mental health, physical health, and academic achievement. This includes a 24% lower risk in reading below grade level, a 50% reduction in mental health problems, and more.
“ParentCorps is more than just professional development for staff or another parent meeting for parents. It’s an experience that gives you space to reflect on your past and how it has shaped your present. It builds community and connection as well as strengthens relationships amongst staff and families." - Kecia Rorie, Starfish Family Services
Where We Are Going
After successful piloting and scaling in the nation’s largest school district, the NYC Department of Education, expansion to Head Starts and school districts in Michigan and Texas, and rigorous evaluation showing powerful long-term outcomes for children, we believe the time to grow ParentCorps’ reach is now.
In strategic planning for national expansion, simply scaling ParentCorps to more pre-K programs felt insufficient in the face of urgent inequities. Rather than focusing only on school-by-school growth, we are committed to scaling impact.
This includes a deep commitment to training and coaching partner organizations, strengthening our public engagement to advance equity in early childhood education, working hand-in-hand with school systems to integrate ParentCorps, and more.
Our goal? To not just increase the number of pre-K programs with ParentCorps, but reimagine early childhood education nationwide to advance health and education equity.
