I’m coming out of Marathon Retirement (again) in hopes of raising money, awareness, and most importantly support for families who have lived through every parents worst nightmare.
On March 5, 2025, my friends Mary Jo and Geoff Beck experienced the unimaginable. Their two-year-old son, Levi, a happy and healthy little boy who filled their home with smiles and laughter, went to sleep and never woke up.
After an exhaustive investigation and full autopsy found no explanation for his death, Levi’s passing was classified as Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC) — a rare and devastating category of death affecting children over the age of one that remains poorly understood.
For Levi’s family, the absence of an answer has become a reason to search for one.
Since losing Levi, Mary Jo and Geoff have worked to make sure their son’s name continues to be spoken and his story continues to be told. Their community even renamed the quiet stretch of road leading to their home Levi Lane — a permanent reminder of the little boy who changed their lives forever.
This year, I’m carrying Levi’s name with me for 26.2 miles at the Chicago Marathon.
I’m running in Levi’s memory and raising money to support the NYU Langone SUDC Registry & Research Collaborative, where researchers are working to better understand why tragedies like Levi’s happen and, ultimately, how they might be prevented.
Every mile is for Levi. Every donation supports research. Every person who learns his story helps keep his name alive.
I hope you’ll join me in remembering Levi, supporting his family, and helping researchers search for the answers that families affected by SUDC so desperately deserve.
For Levi. For answers. For every family that deserves to know why.
