The Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone is proud to honor Lauren Knickerbocker, PhD, by establishing a memorial treatment scholarship fund in her name. Dr. Knickerbocker was a valued member of the Department who, during her 12-year tenure, actively advanced the clinical, education, and research missions of the Department. Dr. Knickerbocker succumbed to cancer too young, but her legacy continues in the lives of the children she served, in the undergraduates and psychologists she trained, and in the programs she established or enhanced. Dr. Knickerbocker was the co-director of two important clinical programs at the Department's Child Study Center: the Selective Mutism Treatment Program and the Early Childhood Program. Dr. Knickerbocker's efforts expanded and enlivened intensive treatments for Selective Mutism through Camp Courage and also established the support services for parents of children in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Tisch Hospital. Dr. Knickerbocker's colleagues valued her skill at team building, her kind and thoughtful collaboration, and her wisdom despite her young age.
Dr. Knickerbocker had an undeniably positive impact on the lives she touched. Her warmth, lively energy, and persistent optimism contributed to significant growth in many children and adolescents. Her motto: “we can all do hard things” guided those with anxiety disorders to be brave in the face of their fears and worries. Dr. Knickerbocker's intelligent and engaging lectures inspired many undergraduates and psychologists in training and her gentle toughness assisted parents and kids to overcome some of their aggressive demons in order to become assertive, but appropriately calm and cooperative at home, at school, and in their social contacts.
This scholarship fund will ensure that Dr. Knickerbocker's contributions will continue to assist children and their families. Donations to the fund will enhance Dr. Knickerbocker’s legacy. Thank you for considering financial support to help others in Dr. Lauren Knickerbocker's name.
