Dear friends and family,
As many of you likely remember, Andrew cared about medical research long before he was diagnosed with pancreas cancer in June 2024. After his parents passed away in 2015, he became involved with the NIH, proudly contributing to The BRCA Challenge—an initiative designed to improve understanding of BRCA1 and BRCA2 genetic variants—and enrolling in a long-term study aimed at early detection of prostate cancer for BRCA-positive men. Later, he’d eagerly sign (us both) up for Novavax’s COVID-19 vaccine trials.
After his cancer diagnosis, he studied the disease and sought every support and peer program he could with the help of organizations like PanCan. We also talked many times about his desire for me to give generously to NYU after his death. In fact, on the day he died, he was texting one of his doctors about whether she knew how much it cost to endow a professorship. (She didn’t, but the answer is millions. Andrew always aimed high.)
This fund is just one part of Andrew’s legacy, but he would tell you that it’s a critical one. It’s also meant to honor Drs. Rafael Winograd and Olivia Seecof, whose attention, care, and friendship meant the world to him. This money will be used to launch early-phase clinical trials that test innovative ideas not yet eligible for federal funding; advance high-risk, high-reward research; and to accelerate discoveries related to pancreatic cancer. The work that Drs. Winograd and Seecof are doing is so important both on this broad scale and to the individual lives they touch.
On the one-year anniversary of Andrew’s death, August 26, 2026, a breakthrough treatment for pancreas cancer was approved by the FDA. That is so fitting, as Andrew would have been thrilled to celebrate that.
Whether or not you decide to donate to this fund, please consider donating blood. As the recipient of many transfusions, particularly in his last weeks, Andrew would value that gift just as much.
Love,
Elyse, Vivian, and Wesley Steinhaus
