In Loving Memory of Oliver Emmett Freiberg
Throughout the past year as we have tried to navigate the world without our beloved Oliver, we have given tremendous thought to how best to honor his memory. The HCM and resultant sudden cardiac arrest that took Oliver's life and shattered ours is a disease in desperate need of study to help medical professionals best advise families on the appropriate courses of action for their loved ones.
While Oliver discovered his heart condition as a teenager and adapted his activities accordingly, he never wanted to be defined by the disease. As he grew older he felt that he was likely to live a long and normal life. As did we.
We have received countless letters and emails from people whose lives Oliver touched, from friends aggrieved at his passing. Those words have offered us comfort: they speak to Oliver's infectious smile, his kindness, thoughtfulness, sweet and loving nature, his culinary prowess, his athletic skill, his tremendous sense of style and appreciation of the "good things in life", his work ethic, movie star looks and above all, his commitment to, and love for, family, including his darling Caroline.
In Oliver's honor and memory, we have established The Oliver Emmett Freiberg Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Fund. We are deeply grateful to you for all your support and love. Please see Ways to Give below.
We thank you again with love,
The Taub Freiberg Family
The Oliver Emmett Freiberg Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Fund
The Oliver Emmett Freiberg Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) Research Fund at NYU Langone Health has been established to make ground-breaking advances in the diagnosis and treatment of HCM. The team of dedicated researchers and clinicians in the HCM Program within the Leon H. Charney Division of Cardiology at NYU Langone Health are at the forefront of innovative studies that aim to transform the way we understand and treat HCM. The initial focus of the Fund will include leveraging advances in AI and "big data" to identify patients at risk of HCM prior to overt disease, to predict the clinical course of patients with established disease, and importantly, to identify those patients at highest risk of poor outcomes, including those who might benefit from implantable defibrillators to avert sudden cardiac death. The Fund will also study the outcomes of families who have employed preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) as part of the IVF family planning process. This will be the first study done to confirm how and whether PGT works to remove the HCM genetic abnormalities; publishing the outcomes of this research worldwide will be greatly impactful as families navigating HCM genetic abnormalities consider PGT.
Your gift will accelerate discoveries and fuel the next generation of breakthroughs that could fundamentally change how we prevent, diagnose, and treat this complex cardiac condition. As the No. 1 destination in the country for cardiology, heart, and vascular surgery we are confident your support will allow the team at NYU Langone to conduct life-changing medical research. Thank you for your partnership.
