I'm raising money for glioblastoma research
I am running the New York City Marathon to raise money for research in glioblastoma, the deadliest form of brain cancer, at Perlmutter Cancer Center.
My father, Lionel Berger, MD, was diagnosed with glioblastoma in 2020. A surgeon himself, my dad meticulously researched his treatment options and chose to be treated at Perlmutter Cancer Center by Daniel Orringer, MD.
Dr. Orringer developed advanced technology to identify which genetic mutations are present in a brain tumor during surgery to remove the tumor. The previous testing method required a biopsy and weeks of waiting for results before the start of treatment or surgery. A glioblastoma tumor can double in size within two weeks. My dad died in 2021, only nine months after his diagnosis of brain cancer.
Research that leads to new technology and treatment options has the potential to improve people’s lives when time is limited. I hope the money I raise while running the marathon will fund advancements that help patients with glioblastoma live longer, higher-quality lives.
I am also allocating a portion of the funds I raise to Stamp Out Cancer Brooklyn, a community-engaged initiative at Perlmutter Cancer Center, which aims to reduce cancer disparities in Brooklyn. Funds will support bilingual community health workers (CHWs) who build sustainable, trust-based linkages between the cancer center and the community through education, engagement, and personalized navigation services.
Thank you for donating to treat the disease that took my dad's life and help me run the New York City Marathon. This summer will mark five years since my dad died. My dad took my profile photo of me running the NYC Half Marathon in 2018.
You are welcome to note if you prefer your donation to go to glioblastoma research or Stamp Out Cancer Brooklyn, both important causes.
