Even in death, my mother wanted to pass on the gift of life, just as she had received it as a transplant recipient. After being declared brain dead on July 2, she remained on a ventilator until July 9 in order to participate in a clinical research trial led by Dr. Nader Moazami and his team at the NYU Langone Transplant Institute.
The objective of the trial was to advance the field of xenotransplantation closer to realizing a new supply of organs for those facing life-threatening disease. It is expected that one day her contributions to this research will lead to saving thousands of more lives.
In order to help this research reach its full potential, my family and I are raising funds in honor of my mother, Alva Capuano, for the benefit of Dr. Moazami and the NYU Langone Transplant Institute's transplant research efforts.
