Where We’re At
ParentCorps is 25! As part of the celebration for this huge milestone, we are launching our first #GivingTuesday campaign on November 28, 2023. With your support, we aim to raise $25,000 in individual donations by January 15 to help support ParentCorps’ mission to help schools partner with families to build a future where all children thrive.
What We Do
We often talk about children being ready for school. What if we focused on getting schools ready for children and their families?
Despite the incredible promise of early childhood education, children are still not being set up to succeed in K-12. Steep education inequities persist for huge numbers of children due to poverty and structural racism. This is, in part, because pre-K programs are not fully set up to build the home-school connection and emotionally responsive environments that are key to transformative impact in early education. Educators often report these areas as key challenges, and need more support to provide high-quality, family centered pre-K experience.
ParentCorps is an evidence-based enhancement to pre-K designed to target this problem. In partnership with pre-K programs, ParentCorps works to build a different and more impactful early education experience - one that centers race and culture, engages parents as partners, and supports children’s social-emotional well-being - to help unlock the full promise of early childhood education. Two randomized controlled trials show that our model (which includes professional development for pre-K educators, social-emotional learning for pre-K children, and programming for pre-K families) has meaningful, sustained impacts on children’s mental health, physical health, and academic achievement. This includes a 24% lower risk in reading below grade level, a 50% reduction in mental health problems, and more.
Hear from Our Partners
“ParentCorps is more than just professional development for staff or another parent meeting for parents. It’s an experience that gives you space to reflect on your past and how it has shaped your present. It builds community and connection as well as strengthens relationships amongst staff and families." - Kecia Rorie, Starfish Family Services
“There are no right or wrong answers… What works for one family may not work for another – and what works at home on Monday may not work on Thursday. What I love about ParentCorps is that we not only give families practical tools to use each week but we also offer a safe, predictable environment that they can come to… Sometimes all you need is somewhere to go and be understood.” - Mia Roberts, ParentCorps Facilitator
“[ParentCorps] has really helped me improve my parenting and deal with challenges I come across as a first time parent. The impact it has on me is inexplicable." - NYC Caregiver
Where We Are Going
After successful piloting and scaling in the nation’s largest school district, NYC Public Schools, as well as Head Starts and school districts in Michigan, Texas, North Carolina, and Oklahoma, we believe the time to grow ParentCorps’ reach is now.
In strategic planning for national expansion, simply scaling ParentCorps to more pre-K programs felt insufficient in the face of urgent inequities. Rather than focusing only on school-by-school growth, we are committed to scaling impact.
This includes a deep commitment to training and coaching partner organizations, strengthening our public engagement to advance equity in early childhood education, working hand-in-hand with school systems to integrate ParentCorps, and more.
Our goal? To reimagine early childhood education nationwide to advance health and education equity.
